Pay Attention to Distraction Burglaries

The Howard County Police Department wants to warn people about “distraction burglaries”.

What’s a distraction burglary? It works like this: One burglar rings the doorbell, says they’re from a particular utility company, and they need to check the meter. So you take this guy to go look at your meter, and his buddy standing outside comes in and takes a bunch of your stuff. After he’s done, the ‘utility’ guy is going to leave, and you’re going to realize that you got scammed.

A couple ways to minimize your risk:

  • Before you let a utility worker into your house, make sure they have some sort of ID. You can even call the company to verify it.
  • If someone’s selling you something, they’re supposed to have a solicitor’s license from the county.
  • Take a look at the police department’s advice here.
